How to redesign a website without losing SEO

The migration steps that protect rankings, backlinks, traffic, and indexed pages during a redesign.

A redesign should not reset your SEO. Traffic drops happen when teams change URLs, delete ranking content, break internal links, remove schema, or launch without redirects. The design is rarely the problem. The migration is.

Before launch

  • Export all existing URLs from the sitemap, CMS, analytics, and a crawl tool.
  • Pull Search Console landing pages and queries for the last 12 months.
  • Identify pages with backlinks before changing or deleting anything.
  • Map every old URL to a new URL with a 301 redirect.
  • Keep ranking page copy close to the original until the new version proves itself.

Launch day

  1. 01Deploy during a low-traffic window.
  2. 02Test redirects before announcing the launch.
  3. 03Submit the sitemap.
  4. 04Check robots.txt and canonical tags.
  5. 05Verify forms, checkout, analytics, and schema.

After launch

Watch Search Console daily for the first week and weekly for the next month. Expect normal movement. Panic only if indexed pages disappear, impressions collapse, or important URLs return 404s.

Every Vivid Resources redesign includes URL mapping, redirect setup, schema migration, and post-launch monitoring. Start a project.
